Archeological records show that Native Americans
lived in this vicinity for thousands of years .....
John Carr, a gold miner, provided one of the first written accounts
of the area. Coming over the Salmon Mountains, Carr arrived
at the mouth of the North Fork in February of 1851.
There, inside a tent-covered trading post, Carr found four men
playing cards ... nearby ... a keg of whiskey. *
